Glasgow Sights, Sounds and Hotels
The idiosyncratic Burrell Collection, donated to the city by wealthy industrialist Sir William Burrell comprises of 8,000 exhibits of all descriptions, from ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman artifacts to Chinese porcelain, bronzes, and jade, to medieval tapestries and furniture, stained glass, Rodin sculptures, and superb paintings by Degas, Sir Henry Raeburn, Renoir and Cézanne. The collection is housed in a 1983 ultramodern prize-winning building in Pollok Country Park. The stylish building of pink sandstone and stainless steel has carved-stone Romanesque doorways which are incorporated into the structure and some of the galleries are replicas of rooms in Hutton Castle, which was the Burrell residence. Carpeted floors preserve the silence to consider the brilliantly displayed treasures in their spectacular setting where a stream of natural light is admitted through the floor-to-ceiling windows, and the outside trees and landscape enhance the effect created by the exhibits.
Glasgow's Burrell Collection is one of the top attractions in Glasgow, and the outstanding Glasgow hotels will ensure your comfort and peace of mind in Scotland's largest city.
