It is a popular practice to hike through the fantastically beautiful Sarmaria Gorge to the southwest coast village of Agia Roumeli. This 18km long gorge is only 3.5m wide when passing through the Iron Gates and at some points the sheer wall mountain walls are 600m high. From May to mid October, one can hike through the gorge between 6am to 3pm, if there is not too much water, and enjoy the abundance of fauna and the stunning flora during springtime. The entrance to the gorge is 43km from Chania and the road there by bus allows you to enjoy the picturesque countryside. From Aglia Roumeli one take a boat to visit Loutro and Hora Sfakion.
