Corfu Sights, Sounds and Hotels
Achilleio was built in the 20th century 1890-91 for Empress Elizabeth of Austria, otherwise known as Princess Sissy, who’s favourite hero was Achilles. The sizeable Neo Classical building boasts beautiful gardens, Renaissance statues and fantastic works of art. The Achilles theme is sustained in many of the statues throughout the grounds, with the Dying Achilles by Herter (1884) accredited to be the most eloquent. A path, which passes around the building, leads to a balconied viewpoint where there is a superb view to Corfu town over the woods in between. Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany bought Achilleio as a holiday home after Princess Sissy was assassinated in 1898 in Geneva, and the palace is now a museum exhibiting the personal effects of the Empress and the Kaiser.
Corfu will prove to provide the absolutely perfect holiday. There are so many diverse and interesting sites such as Achilleio in Corfu you will never have a dull moment, and the fabulous Corfu hotels will attend to your every whim.
